Satisfied with Your SERS Medicare Plan? Toss those Mailers

One sure sign of fall each year is when Medicare enrollees receive plan offerings in the mail. You also may see TV ads promising a Medicare plan review or benefits you could be missing. These requests have one goal: to persuade you to switch your Medicare Advantage or Part D plans during the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period. However, it’s important to understand that SERS’ enrollment rules prevent you from returning to coverage if you choose another plan. If you decide to switch from your SERS Aetna Medicare Plan (PPO) with Express Scripts drug plan, you should be aware that you cannot return to SERS. This also means your SERS Medicare Part B Reimbursement of $45.50 will end. Before you make any decisions about switching plans, it’s important to thoroughly review the plan documents. IF YOU ENROLL IN ANOTHER PLAN BUT WANT TO STAY WITH SERS

Some SERS enrollees are only aware they have been enrolled in another Medicare plan once Aetna and Express Scripts notify them that their SERS coverage is ending. You can stay with SERS, but there’s a limited window to act. First, call SERS at 1-800-878-5853 to say that you want to remain with SERS. In addition, you must provide SERS with a signed and dated statement of your intent to stay enrolled.  You also must call the other plan to cancel it as if never enrolled.
