The School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS) is committed to serving the needs of our members, retirees, and employers while working to protect the safety and health of everyone including the community at large. We are following all state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19 (the new coronavirus). As these guidelines change, we will update our outreach and staff activities.
As this health crisis evolves, please know we hope you and your family remain healthy, and extend our thoughts and well-wishes to all those who have been affected.
The electronic delivery of benefit payments remains on schedule. However, for those who still receive paper checks, we cannot guarantee timely delivery through the mail, and also please note that in-person banking transactions are largely being limited to drive-through stations or scheduled appointments. Checks are scheduled for mailing on Monday, March 30. Accordingly, we strongly urge you to have your future benefits delivered via direct deposit. Direct deposit ensures timely payment and requires less staff resources to process. Complete the Direct Deposit Form, which is available on our website, and send or fax it to us.
Please note that stock market declines do not affect benefit amounts. Under current Ohio law, once you retire, SERS must provide a lifetime pension and this amount cannot be reduced. This is one big advantage that defined benefit pension plans like SERS have over defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s, IRAs, and 403(b) retirement plans.
Thank you for your ongoing dedication to serving our schools. We are privileged to serve you. Please monitor our website for continued updates and changes as this situation develops.
